Urdu Love Poetry Biography

However, what we today know as Urdu language had initially begun as Rekhta (a language for literary usage) and our reproachful attitude towards English helped Urdu prosper and reach creative heights.

If there was ever a time that had the most effective influence on Urdu love poetry, it had to be the 18th century. This decade is said to have brought a kind of vibrancy and excitement in the production of Urdu verses that made the poetry life like and such influences cannot be seen for at least 500 years before or after this period. The political history of Delhi had a large contribution to this history. The capital city was still tottery in its legs on literary creativity as Persian was still the exotic language of the court while the city’s common language was Hindi or Hindvi as it was popularly known.
The literary form of Hindi in which literature was produced was then called “Rekhta”; which loosely translates to mixed. Urdu as language name came into use much later in the day; and till almost the end of the 18th century Rekhta was used as the universal name for the language. Though Delhi in its typical royal attitude looked at Rekhta with a faint air of disapproval and as a language that was inferior to Persian, Rekhta soon became very popular with the masses. The popularity of Rekhta ushered in an era of literary status and sophistication for not only poetry, but also of ghazals and Urdu shayari and gave the world gems in the works of Vali, Khusrau, Mus’hafi etc.
A distinct feature of Urdu love poetry that remains predominant till date was said to have been established during this period – the idea of a beloved instead of an actual lover. This idea gave the poet the liberation to be free from all sorts of realism and thus let Urdu poetry soar to the highest points and to the infinite depths that would otherwise have been difficult to achieve. It can be said that it lay in the domain of pseudo realism.
Different from this approach is the Urdu shayari that does away with the idealistic and unworldly air and rather pines for the lover whose love is unreciprocated. The emotions in the shayari are much more realistic and the situation relevant to the day because the idealism in these couplets does not compromise with the practicality of the situation.
Another notable feature of Urdu poetry is the gender of the beloved. Many of the love poetry in Urdu maintain the tone of the female as the protagonist/ lover who is yearning for the love of male. This tone could be developed in 18th century only because of the modernity of perspective that literature had acquired. However, later, these kinds of verses earned a rather disdainful look from many learned men.
Of all things, what can be definitely said wit conviction is that Urdu poetry received a huge impetus during the 18th and early 19th century. And a lot of that was achieved because of the Indian attitude of looking down upon English as a rather uncivilized language. This approach helped Urdu prosper and reach its zenith in terms of popularity and creativity which gave us such gems in the form of ghazals, shayaris, and nazms that are cherished till date.
